“We all make choices about how we conduct our lives. But there are fundamental aspects of ourselves about which we don’t get a choice—eye color, fingerprints and left- or right-handedness, for example. We also don’t get a choice about our feelings of sexual attraction. I didn’t choose my same-gender feelings of sexual attraction any more than my brother and sister chose their opposite-gender feelings of sexual attraction” –Eric Marcus
In the Summer of 2008, the production of a life changing documentary will begin. It will end the myth of having a choice over your sexual orientation. ‘Straight for a Month’ will be filming in Des Moines from June till the film is completed. The main idea is that gay students between ages 14 and 21 will spend a whole month as average straight students while completing basic challenges and recording their experiences and emotions. At the same time, straight students will spend a month in the gay community with a separate set of challenges. The point is to get teenagers in the mindset of the opposite sexuality and prove whether or not it is at all possible to change your sexual orientation. As homosexuals, we are very aware that we can’t be straight but we’ve never been able to prove it. Scientific studies have come up inconclusive. This is why this film will not capture the experiment of changing sexuality, but the experience.
“It’s becoming more apparent that the gay community wishes to identify itself separately from the heterosexuals, as if having an attraction for the same sex makes us any different from everybody else,” says Zachary Hayes, “I refuse to protest for gay rights, I would never waist my time on gay rights. This film is not about that, it’s about having equal rights for everyone just because they’re human.” It is rumored that the film isn’t about homosexuals or heterosexuals, but how futile the line between them is. There will be a lot of emphasis on bisexuals and bi-curious because they are proof that sexuality isn’t one way or another. The documentary wishes to make other points such as the difficulty of coming out.
If you are willing to change your sexuality for an entire month and be a “main character” in the film, please send us an email as soon as you can so we can start planning on that. We need both gay and straight teenagers to document. Anybody else who wants to participate but not change their lifestyle may also send us and email because the film isn’t just about the myth of choice. For more information, contact us:
